The four speakers of the conference “Shepherdesses in the Alps – Insights into pastoralism” on 5 November agreed that the pastoral profession is a challenging but also fulfilling profession The work of a shepherdess protects the animals and brings numerous other advantages: crashes are prevented, diseases are cared for and the alpine pastures are optimally covered by guided grazing. This, in turn, increases soil health, prevents erosion and preserves biodiversity. A recurring theme, however, was the difficulty of finding workers and training opportunities, as well as the lack of adequate political support. Hence the demands of the shepherdesses: fair remuneration and financial support for the employment of qualified shepherds, as well as for the purchase of additional livestock protection measures.
Four shepherdesses, four stories, four working models
After a short presentation of the project and the essential role of the shepherds as livestock protection element, four shepherdesses from Austria, South Tyrol and Germany shared in detail their experiences on the alpine pastures and answered many questions of the more than 200 participants. What was outstanding: although all speakers work with grazing animals on the alpine pastures, the available means and approaches are very different.
Anna Huber, a career changer, described her experiences during an eventful summer on the Hochwipfelalm in Carinthia and how she struggled with wind, weather and lightning strikes. Then Barbara Crea talked about the revitalization of traditional agriculture in Lessinia and the use of livestock guarding dogs. Astrid Summerer joined directly from the Transhumance in Friuli, where she moves from pasture to pasture with her colleagues and dogs throughout the year. Christina Ziegerhofer concluded with the presentation of a project that combines tourism and shepherding at Hauser Kaibling and also makes use of paddocks.

Thank you for highlighting this very interesting work in livestock and in the women who support this work. Showing young people, and women in particular, about the work and possible careers in this work is exciting to me. As in Europe, there are fewer people working in agriculture as in the US due to the pay, long hours, and isolation from technology and comforts. I think highlighting WHY this work is important is something I’m sure the LifeStockProtect organization is probably working towards. The timing for me was very good even in the western US (early 6 am start) but still doable! Karen B.

Kontrastreicher Blick auf die Hirtinnen Welt. Vier interessante, spannende Vorträge/Kurzporträts. Die Thematik allgemein ist mir gut bekannt, weil ich selber als Hirte tätig bin, und das schon seit 26 Almsommern. Die Theorien übertünchen in den Debatten zumeist die Tatsache, dass es sich bei der Lebenswelt Alm immer um Individualität handelt. Letztlich ist keine Alm, keine Gegend, keine Hirtenkultur mit der anderen 1:1 vergleichbar, sondern eben sehr, sehr individuell. Das gilt auch für alle Hirtinnen und Hirten, von denen ich mehrere kenne, ein jeder hat seine eigene Geschichte, obwohl es sich um vermeintlich selbe Tätigkeiten handelt. Die vier unterschiedlichen vortragenden Hirtinnen bestätigen das. Ich finde es gut, wenn mehr und mehr praktisches Denken in die Thematik hineinkommt. Neben den vier Porträtierten heute fand ich die Einführung von Julia Ramsauer besonders erwähnenswert, dass deutete einige Male stark in Richtung praktische Herangehensweisen. Danke sehr! Peter G.
