Shepherding contributes to heightened livestock protection in both flatlands and alpine areas. Especially in areas where fences cannot be used, livestock guarding dogs can effectively keep grazing animals from harm by carnivores.<\/p>\n\n

Shepherdesses and shepherds can manage sheep as well as other animals such as goats and cattle. They take care of their health, protect them from all kinds of danger, shield them from weather changes, guide the herd to new grazing areas, build and repair fences, and help in the lambing season. <\/p>\n\n

Additionally, shepherdesses and shepherds use the grazing areas sustainably, so that they are preserved in the long term. Consciously guided grazing improves biodiversity and the touristic landscape and it minimises erosion, thereby contributing to protecting the water supply and the climate.<\/p>\n\n

During shepherding, the used grazing areas, the timeframe of their grazing, all due tasks and exceptional circumstances such as sickness or accidents are recorded in a grazing diary. Shepherdesses and shepherds are involved in organisation, communication and coordination of mountain pasture managers, workers and transhumance. They have an especially important communication role in areas used by tourists, which is of high societal importance. <\/p>\n\n

During the grazing season, they take care of all this responsibly, on a daily basis in all weathers, presently in usually very basic living conditions. <\/p>\n\n

They benefit from their all-encompassing knowledge about livestock, wild animals and the use of working dogs. In cases of illness or injury, they must take care of their animals and when necessary, be able to effectively save them. The knowledge of rights and responsibilities, guided grazing, feeding dogs and livestock, and alpine conditions, is vital. This also includes developing a sense for dangerous situations, as well as raed the behaviour of dogs and livestock, and making decisions accordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n

Das K2 ist ein bei Touristen beliebtes und leicht erreichbares Ausflugsziel.

Herdenschutz auf hochalpinen Almen

\nDie S\u00fcdtiroler Stilfser Almgenossenschaft beweidet in den Monaten Juli bis September die auf \u00fcber 2500 hm liegenden Almfl\u00e4chen oberhalb Sulden seit Jahrzehnten.

\nAufgrund der st\u00e4ndigen Wolfpr\u00e4senz wurde nun aber zus\u00e4tzlich zum Hirten 6 Herdenschutzhunde Cane de Pastore Maremmano Abruzzese aus dem Nationalpark Majella eingesetzt.

\nIn diesem herausfordernden Gel\u00e4nde sind jetzt 2 Hirten notwendig um auch tags\u00fcber die Herde kompakt zu f\u00fchren und abends im Nachtpferch zu h\u00fcten.

\nEine Herausforderung ist die Modernisierung der Hirtenunterk\u00fcnfte.

\nDie Versorgung der H\u00fctten in diesem hochalpinen Gel\u00e4nde ohne Strassen oder Wege wird seit jeher durch Helicopterfl\u00fcge sichergestellt.<\/p>\n \n

Herdenschutz mit einer Hirtin, 5 Herdenschutzhunde, 400 Schafe und Ziegen von 45 Auftreiber rund um den Ortler in hochalpinen Gel\u00e4nde. LIFEstockProtect steht hier beratend zur Seite. Die Herdenschutzhunde sind 3 Tage vor diesen Aufnahmen aus den Abruzzen direkt auf die Alm gekommen. Weder die Schafe noch Ziegen kannten Herdenschutzhunde. Die Anzahl der Auftreiber hat sich dieses Jahr erh\u00f6ht.
