While the introduction of herd protection measures is important, LIFEstockProtect also recognizes that the implementation of these measures will represent a significant additional workload.<\/p>\n\n

As part of the project, LIFEstockProtect is therefore promoting a volunteer network that can help Shepherds and farmers to implement livestock protection measures on a day-to-day basis. This activity in the project builds on existing initiatives in Europe, such as PASTURS<\/a> (funded by project partner Eliante<\/a> ) and Wikiwolves<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

Network based on a tried and tested model <\/h3>\n\n

In 2022, we are testing our volunteer network together with a number of farmers in Austria, Bavaria and South Tyrol. However, our aim is to expand our network in the coming years and support more and more farmers and Shepherds in the process. <\/p>\n\n

First, LIFEstockProtect adopts the method of the PASTURS project, where already trained volunteers stay on the farm for at least one week to help the farmer. This project supports farmers who have opted for livestock protection, promotes the exchange of knowledge and best practice processes and enables an open exchange between people from different backgrounds. They get to know each other and can exchange ideas and information about their experiences with livestock protection. <\/p>\n\n

A rewarding experience<\/h3>\n\n

Volunteers are expected to participate enthusiastically on the farm and to share and expand their knowledge of livestock protection with the Shepherds and farmers. The activities are very varied: volunteers help with animal care and other farming activities, build fences, work with the working dogs, greet tourists and explain the safety precautions for livestock protection measures. The farmers who host the volunteers not only share their food and home, but also their knowledge of the region and the animals as well as their previous experience in their field of work. <\/p>\n\n

I have tried to see the mountain through the eyes of a Shepherd; they are different from those who see the mountain as just a place to hike. I have tried to climb the mountain diligently and safely with the feet of a Shepherd, even when it seems impossible, and tried to see the dizzying landscape as a simple backdrop to my daily tasks. I have tried many new things on the mountain pasture; my ideas are different, my perception of reality has been enriched and I know that from now on, all the shepherds with their flocks that I meet remind me of Andrea and Veronica, remind me of their effort and passion. I have left a part of myself behind on the mountain pasture, but I still carry a little piece of Alpe Manina within me. <\/p>\n<\/div>
