Targeted grazing is beneficial for animals and habitat. This was the conclusion that could be drawn from the event that recently took place at the Rieserferner – Ahrn Nature Park House in Sand in Taufers. The speaker, Kurt Kusstatscher, a biologist specializing in plant communities in alpine meadows, a farmer and a specialist for old livestock breeds in the South Tyrol Variety Garden Association, provided information on the advantages of controlled pasture use: the presence of shepherds and paddocking are suitable measures both to improve pastures and to better protect the animals. Whether in the event of births, injuries, illnesses or threats from predators, the presence of shepherdesses guarantees rapid intervention and, in the case of predators, deterrence. The audience, students from the Dietenheim agricultural college and representatives of the South Tyrolean forestry service listened with interest to the expert’s presentation.
