Conference announcement: Shepherdesses in the Alps

Pastoralism with shepherdess, shepherd and dogs is probably one of the oldest forms of agriculture. However, it has slowly lost its importance in the German-speaking countries over the last decades. Now it is gradually being brought back, as shepherding is not only a form of livestock protection, but also brings numerous benefits for farm animals and the biodiversity of alpine pastures. Shepherding is thus characterised not only by a close bond with their own animals, but also by a broad view of the entire ecosystem.

Pastoralism and its revival also play a central role in LIFEstockProtect. That is why a whole online conference “Shepherdesses in the Alps – Insights into pastoralism” will be dedicated to the topic. In the afternoon of the 5th of November, four shepherdesses from Germany, Austria and Italy will showcase their work and experiences to the audience. Like this, the participants will gain exciting insights into the profession, the challenges and the future of shepherding in the project region and beyond.

After the success of the first trilingual livestock protection conference in January 2021, this conference will follow a similar structure: the online format and simultaneous translation into German, Italian and English will allow everybody to join, no matter where they are situated. The conference will be held via ZOOM, of course free of charge, but registration is required. Registration is open, meaning that you can save your spot already. The detailed programme including speakers will be announced in September.
